The Dakar KTM

Many people in Argentina are somehow involved in motorsport. We’ve seen many racing cars or bikes being transported on trailers everywhere, tuning shops in each town, and during night time, street racing is common. On TV, there are always news about Formula 1, MotoGP, WRC and other rallies. There’s no wonder the name of high grade gasoline is Fangio XXI!

One day we met a guy who was the owner/manager of a Dakar rally team, so I got the chance to rev the engine of a real racing bike for a bit! I also learned that he experienced in the past problems with water seals after using coolant purchased from Peru, so probably that’s why my brand new seals failed after changing the coolant in Nazca. And I was blaming the Austrians who manufactured my seals…

The BenQ DC C1250 camera

So, we purchased this BenQ camera from Montevideo to replace the Canon A710 which I have been using happily for more than four years. At US$130, it was the cheapest model available, good enough until I’m back home to shop for a real one. This camera comes with a very bad menu and an even worse CCD sensor, but with many funny (and useless) shooting modes like “beauty enhancer”, “smile catcher” etc.

However, there is one “feature” giving me more trouble than any other, that is unpredictability: I can shoot three pictures from the same position and with the same settings and still get different results each time. Quality and durability shouldn’t be expected either, as the display got cracked the following day. And since the camera lacks an optical viewfinder, framing will be, from now on, a matter of chance…

Montevideo

We didn’t spend too much time in Colonia, instead we rode straight to Montevideo. And in case you’re wondering why the pictures look so bad, it’s because they were taken with the new BenQ camera, that replaced my beloved Canon A710 which suddenly stopped working.

While sightseeing we found a shoe repair facility where I had my Dainese boots fixed (after too much grinding against the asphalt while cornering), and also the tank bag which needed a new zipper.

Later edit: a photo with my newly repaired shoes added 🙂
